25 Things I Learned About Online Voting Contests

I’ve entered several contests and drawings this year. I won an iPhone (valued at $600), a full access pass to Blogworld (valued at $900) so I feel I came out ahead.

There were a few things I didn’t win even though I felt I had the best submission.  You could also say I won a job online since I’m now doing webinars for Zendesk.  Actually, nearly all my business for the last 3 years of consulting IT gigs came from Internet leads.  This means I did a good job of communicating what I did, SEO and turning the inquiry into billable work.

Ok, back to winning contests!

It takes courage to enter contests. You put yourself “out there” for all to judge. At first I felt very uncomfortable but over time, I began to enjoy the future we all held our breaths for.

I will impart my learnings to date.

25 Things To Consider When Entering Online Contests (If You Want To Win)

  1. Ramp up support from people offline
  2. Blog about it vs using Twitter
  3. Talk about the voting often
  4. Give compelling reasons why you want to win
  5. Ask for the votes
  6. Tell stories about your future after you’ve won said contest
  7. Visualize yourself winning said contest
  8. Avoid people who say they never win stuff (bad luck)
  9. Sometimes the voting isn’t technically setup to be fair
  10. Find supporting blogs and Wikipedia links to strengthen your bid for 1st place
  11. Use Google Alerts to keep your ears open for more contests
  12. Each contest you enter makes the next one easier
  13. Some people never win and some people always win
  14. Research the judges
  15. Research past contest winners
  16. Interview past contest winners
  17. Pray (a lot)
  18. Hope is an endless fountain of abundance
  19. Journal about winning and how your life will change
  20. Stay positive
  21. Tell people you’re looking to enter similar contest
  22. Even if you lose, remember you still made the journey
  23. Faith can take you all the way to the top
  24. Reflect on other times you have felt lucky or blessed
  25. Remember that luck is being prepared for the opportunity
