I noticed a lot of traffic to my Dell XPS 8000 post in the last few days and it looks like Dell has discontinued the XPS 8000 and a rumored 8100 will be released soon
But why?
Is it because Dell failed to meet the holiday and Christmas demand? I suspect that Dell wants to distance themselves from the hundreds of complaints about delays, failed deliveries and slow orders for the 2009 holiday season. By rebranding these systems under a new version number, they can escape the Google searches which will yield complaints about the service and delivery problems.
Here is a recent listing of all the folks trying to find out why Dell pulled the XPS 8000:

Excerpt from New York Times:
Customers have flocked to the Direct2Dell blog and Twitter to free their inner bah humbug. They’re chastising Dell left and right for multiple delays involving their orders – some stretching more than a month. In addition, they’re scoffing at the Dell Holiday Card the company offered as an under-the-tree replacement for missing PCs.
Dell is quoted saying they are having trouble finding parts:
“The reality is that we are seeing increased demand for many of the products consumers want to buy, and it has affected our ability to fulfill the orders,” wrote Lionel Menchaca, the chief blogger at Dell. “In addition, there are also some industrywide constraints on some components (like memory and larger-capacity hard drives) that are delaying the manufacturing of certain products for customers.”
Sammy Diaz (@sammyd) was pretty pissed and tweeted:
@dell not only ruined Christmas but packages STILL havent arrived , Dell customer svc rep passes buck to blame FED-EX #dellfail #fedexfail

My system has been beyond awesome! The power of the Dell XPS 8000 is unreal. It’s fast, beautiful and runs just above a whisper.

Now that Dell is bringing in a new model, you can pick up a fully loaded XPS 8000 for just $929. I paid $1228 (plus $95.49 tax) for the very same system so head over to the Dell Outlet to get a great after holiday deal!
Beat the holiday rush like I did and order in October or November. A lot of these people waited until after Black Friday to order and like I suspected, Dell was unable to meet the demand.

Didn't Dell say some time last year ('08) That they were mearging the “XPS” and their “Alienware” ranges, since they are overlapping ranges (Alienware are Dell's High End Gaming rigs.)

I ordered the Dell XPS 8000 on 12/16. It was backordered once and then again bringing it into mid January. After seeing the online blurbs about the 8000 no longer in production I cancelled my order and had no problem with Dell in that regard. They cancelled it immediately. I was worried that they would say wait for the shipment and then refuse it subjecting me to their 15% restocking fee. Happily that did not happen. Now I have to start the search all over again for a new desktop. Dare I wait for the 8001 to come out !!!!

Very interesting. I actually tried to cancel my order within 30 minutes of
placing it once I saw the estimated delivery day (almost 1 month out) but
Dell refused.
There is the XPS 9000 and Alienware models plus there are now a TON of Dell
XPS 8000 in the Dell Outlet..

I was watching the Dell XPS 8000 with the intention of ordering it after Christmas (after my post-gift finances had settled) and now I'm saddened to see it's gone. I don't really want to spend a default $200 more for the XPS 9000 when the incremental improvements don't seem great to me.
Any idea if they'll be slotting the XPS 9000 in a slightly lower starting price point anytime in the future? I may wait it out.
I will say that Dell has had by far the best values for good new computers that I've seen anywhere. They beat out Frys computers and anything at Best Buy by a mile.
Cool blog Adria, keep it up!

Royce,
You can pick up the Delll XPS 8000 for $929 in the Dell Outlet. I'm helping
my neighbor buy one this week. You can get a full warranty on them just
like the new ones but save yourself $300.

Looks like the 8000 is officially dead.

It looks like the Dell 8000's on Dell Outlet are all the left over retail versions that got shipped back since the 8100 is coming out. They are all black instead of white on the sides. My guess is they are brand new, but got shipped out to Best Buy's, Office Depots, etc, and then back to Dell again.

Help!! I really just don't know what to do. I ordered the 8000 on NOV 9, 2009. It was to be delivered by Nov 30. Still no computer. They won't let me cancel. They say it was shipped but “lost in the system!” I have talked to 15 people, who all say “give us 24-48 hours” and you will know something. Have talked to two “supervisors” – still no one knows anything. If someone would just say it's been delayed, that would be something. But no one knows ANYTHING!

One order says it is shipped, one says it isn't. No tracking # given. Some of the customer service reps say it has been shipped.

I've bought my XPS 8000 here in Brazil in 11/10/2009 and paid like $3300 for it and it still hasn't arrived. Over 2 months…
Well, I'm pissed!
