Heading To Blogging While Brown in Chicago Today

On Twitter: @BWBConference

Website: http://bloggingwhilebrown.com

Today I leave again for Chicago to attend @swirlspice on Twitter.  Erica has several active blogs of her own and also is part of many local blogs in Minneapolis.  Of course, we met via Twitter vs the blogsphere.  Through Erica’s story of attending BarCamp’s and blogging, a new “blogview” began to open up for me.  Suddenly, I was finding Brown bloggers everywhere!  Actually, one of the first things I did when I started using Twitter was to look for and follow Brown people who looked interesting.  The first two people to fit this description were @waynesutton and then @kenyatta.

In the end, it reminds me of the Clark study where researchers did testing on young Black children regarding their doll preference and perceptions of self.  I’m including a video here of Kiri Davis who repeated an informal version of the study and got pretty much the same results.

Being able to find and then connect with authentic people, like me, has helped me become more willing to try things that I thought were “not for me” and I’m grateful for this awareness.

See you all at the conference!

I think you can only call one of them “active” at the moment. Hey, I’m busy! ;-)

I have to confess, when I first stumbled across your online/local presence, my first thought was “How did I not know about her and how is it that no one else I know knows about her?” Because, you know, I know some folks.

But I’m glad it happened and that we could connect and that you’re enjoying your experience. I first got really involved in the local blogging scene because I was blogging into the ether (at Metblog) and Taylor Carik reached out to me. So I’m glad I could pay it forward.

What’s kind of funny about this is now I think about People Adria Should Meet all the time. I think you’ll have to come to SXSW with me some day. But I’m super glad you’re going to BWB and I hope you get to a BlogHer at some point. It’ll blow your mind grapes (that’s a Taylor-ism). I’m so proud! *sniffle*

So a big thank YOU, Adria, for refreshing my perspective on the online circles that I exist in and for just being a super cool person I’m glad to know.

It has been fun reading the previews and reviews of the 2nd annual BWB conference. I attended the first one in Atlanta GA, however, I wasn’t able to make it to Chicago last weekend.

I hope to be there in 2010.

    peace, Villager
