Creating and Forwarding a Subdomain – GoDaddy Help Center — Knowledge Base

A subdomain is the part of a domain that is appended to the beginning of the domain name, like a prefix. For example, if your domain is “coolexample.com,” you can add a subdomain to the front of it to make “one.coolexample.com.” As with a regular domain, you can forward a subdomain to another URL. Subdomains can be up to 25 characters.

To Create and Forward a Subdomain

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. In the My Products section, click Domain Manager.
  3. Click the domain for which you want to create a subdomain.
  4. In the Subdomains section, click add.
  5. In the Subdomain field, enter subdomain you want to use. Do not enter the domain name in the field.
  6. In the Forward to field, enter the URL to which you want to forward your subdomain (for example, http://www.coolexample.com).
  7. In the Redirect type area, select one of the following:
    301 Moved Permanently
Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a “301 Moved Permanently” HTTP response. The HTTP 301 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has permanently moved.
    302 Moved Temporarily
Redirects to the site you specified in the Forward To field using a “302 Found” HTTP response. The HTTP 302 response code tells user-agents (including search engines) that the location has temporarily moved.
  8. Click OK.

    Hey Adria!

When I click on your subdomain link (and when I go there directly), I get a 404 from Facebook. It looks like you need the number at the end of the URL, but not the ?ref=xx part.

    (Unless I missed something)

doh! Nice catch there on noticing the subdomain was not working when I removed the numbers at the end.

I corrected it to point the http://facebook.freshworkshops.com subdomain to http://www.facebook.com/pages/Freshworkshops/92361301918 instead.

i created a blog thru blogspot.com. i purchased my domain name thru google apps directly from blogger.com. My DNS is thru Enom. I having a hard time find out how to create a subdomain thru enom or google apps. can you help?

  • http://www.tmaemarketing.com Christian

    Hey Adria,
Did it just like you said, but for whatever reason, it still doesn’t work for me. How long did you have to wait before it went live? I going about 3 days now.

  • http://butyoureagirl.com Adria Richards

I think in the case of domain registration at Google Apps, they have ENOM manage the domain. I found this page on DNS at ENOM http://www.enom.com/help/dnsdemo.asp.

You would create a subdomain by creating a “CNAME” record but I don’t know if ENOM allows you to forward subdomains which is what makes things very easy using GoDaddy for domain name management. ENOM does say they have “URL Forwarding” so you should contact them to get instructions how to do that.

You can transfer your domain name to GoDaddy for easy DNS and domain management.

If your DNS is at GoDaddy, it should take just a few hours. Mine was forwarding in less than 30 minutes.

When you go to http://facebook.yourdomain.com, what happens?

What did you enter in as the forwarding address?

  • http://www.tmaemarketing.com Christian

    Hey Adria,
Says page not found. I put in “facebook” as the subdomain forwarding to: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Minnetonka-MN/TMA-E-Marketing/40567994039

    @Christian,

It looks like you haven’t set it up propertly.

When I try this link to your Facebook page, it loads.

When I look up your subdomain http://facebook.tmaemarketing.com at OpenDNS Cache Check it says that subdomain isn’t valid. Make sure you follow the directions and add the facebook address as a forwarding address in the lower left hand corner of your domain record.

Thanks Adria, got the subdomain made finaly. Doesnt work yet, but i had success with another domain that is hosted with the same company. Here are the steps i had to do:

Create subdomain at the hosting level.

    Create a .htaccess file

Place this in the .htacess file…

    Options +FollowSymLinks
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Then it worked! BTW- how is your new iPhone:)

Just wanted to say your article was very helpful. With Google apps and enom, it's pretty simple. Instead of a CNAME record, just create a redirect entry under DNS settings.

I am having problems getting my group's facebook page to work as a subdomain. Does this only work with pages and profiles?

  • be3designs

Hi Adria, thanks for the tut! Just wondering if its normal to see a “Problem loading page – Firefox can’t find server at facebook.domain.com” in the 30min-2hour duration it can sometimes take GoDaddy to refresh?

  • http://butyoureagirl.com adriarichards

Maybe, maybe not. It could be that your computer isn’t resolving the new DNS yet. Also make sure you either close and reopen Firefox or bring up a fresh Chrome window to test.

You can check this by pinging the new subdomain in the DOS prompt or in the terminal. If your computer can’t ping it, then you should release/renew your ip address and try again to bring it up in Firefox. If it still doesn’t work, you should power cycle your cable modem and router to flush out the existing DNS settings which could be cached.

Great information about the sub domain registration. It’s great stuff. I learn
domain related informations through your blogs only. thanks to sharing

  • Philzy99

According to GoDaddy, this will not work unless your hosted by GoDaddy.  I am not, I like their registrar, but not their hosting.  If you have access to your DNS you can enable the godaddy forwarding, but if you have access to your dns, you probably don’t need the godaddy forwarding.

Hi, thanks for your article.. but that’s work when your DNS of your domain is GoDaddy’s DNS but how will it work if I’m using a hosting from HostMonster and the domain from GoDaddy?
of course my DNS of the domain should be HostMonster DNS in order to assign domain with the hosting. If I change the DNS to GoDaddy dns my website will stop working. How will this subdomain idea work in my condition??  please help  I need a solution. Thanks.
