Redesign of Network Solutions Homepage Done By Color Blind Website Designers?

Unfortunately, some of my clients still have domain names, email and website hosting services with Network Solutions.

Imagine my surprise to come across this new design. Network Solutions must have played “spin the bottle” to determine that teal and green go REALLY WELL together! lol

Network Solutions is smoking something with this website redesign

What so horrible about the design?  The colors!

I mean, they could have combined red and pink…or orange and red but any way you look at it, they are trying to be “hip” but instead truly represent the AOL of hosting companies.

Maybe the people who designed and approved this look are color blind?

Excerpt of “Are You Color Blind” from everwonder.com

There are three types of color receptors in our eyes, red, green and blue. We also have black and white receptors.  Most color perception defects are for red or green or both. About 10% of males have a color perception defect, but this is rare in females.

Check for yourself  for color perception defects here.
What numbers do you see ?   If any.

colorblind1colorblind2

I know I’m not color blind because I can see all the numbers on the test page AND I’ve noticed when talking with some male clients and designers, we “see” different colors which got me curious about color blindness about 6 months ago. Now if there is a disagreement on color schemes, I ask the client to view a page like this and that opens a dialog for how to move forward on design with no one losing face.

What a good and sensitive tool to use the number/color charts for clients whom you suspect have a color deficiency. One of my sons did a science project using the same charts. All the men in my life are color blind, the IRL phrase, and we have many funny stories because of it. You have given me the inspiration for my next blog post. Thank you!

They could also just lack taste. My boyfriend is colorblind in one eye, but he always looks good, and I…um…well he’s always pointing out when my skirts and shirts don’t go together.

Wouldn’t you think they are saying, “We will pass on this tasteless design right to your site!”?

    Jacque,

I just read your article an couldn’t stop laughing! What a great story! I know you said it’s called color deficiency but everyone seems to call it color blindness (even Wikipedia) so I went for the known vs correct term.

**Edited** HueVue costs $.99 at the iTunes App Store

If you have an iPhone, you might want to try HueVue: Colorblind tools. HueVue identifies colors, simulates color blindness, and has color matching and coordination features.

One of HueVue’s features identifies the color harmonies between a given color (say picked from an image or web site) and a set of saved colors. The idea is to help color blind people match pants with shirts, etc., but could be used for a lot of things.

Different designers have differing views same in the aspect of color scheme. What's important is the overall look that the customer will like and be proud of because at the end of the day, the customer knows best.
