Daylight Savings Begins March 14th, 2010

Remember to move those clocks forward 1 hour!  I’m at SXSW in my room blogging about this so I hope you all have changed your clocks.

Daylight savings for 2010 is as follows:

United States

  • March 14th, 2010 – Ends at 2am, move clocks forward 1 hour
  • November 7th, 2010 – Begins at 2am, move clocks back 1 hour

Will my iPhone, Android, Blackberry or smart phone update daylight savings automatically?

iPhones should will automatically since they use the cell towers for time/date information but don’t quote me on that until tomorrow!

Update 3:03AM - My iPhone and Gillian’s Android both updated once it passed 2am.  They both flipped to 3am!

What sort of technology could be affected?

Often security systems need a human to update the time when daylight savings rolls around.

Some older Windows servers may also require a manual switch based on how you have the time server setup.

Of course, all your fun appliances around the house like your:

  • coffee maker
  • DVD player
  • microwave

will need a few friendly buttons pushed to get them on the same page.  I put daylight savings on my calendar a week ahead of schedule so I know it’s coming and then look at my client’s computer networks to make sure things are on track.

Actually, daylight saving time started over the weekend so we're in DST now. But still, yes, clocks ahead. Hope no one missed anything important yesterday.

I find it funny that there are still some stories at work about using the DST as an excuse. I still hear some that will say they forgot and yet its always fun to hear those stories.

It happened to a co-worker of mine. He showed up late for his shift which
    started at 6am.

Also, if you're traveling, you may not have all your regular news sources
available. I'd think most people don't mark it on their calendars but…I
    could be wrong *smile*
