Is Your iPhone App Supporting Hate Crimes? The story TaxiMagic and Mustafa [VIDEO]

Are iPhone apps like TaxiMagic perpetuating hate crimes?

Last night I took a taxi home from the Tenderloin to the Mission District.  I had the pleasure of being driven by Mustafa, a relaxed, cheerful older man.  Mustafa shared with me how he no longer feels safe driving his cab after 16 years due to an iPhone app called TaxiMagic.  He’s had at least three bad experiences upon being dispatched to a call that originated from the TaxiMagic iPhone app.

It’s affecting his work focus and earnings and the supervisor won’t help.

I asked Mustafa for permission to record our conversation.

If you have ideas that could help Mustafa, email me adria@butyoureagirl.com

That is so horrible and sad. Especially since this app is supposed to be helpful for both customers and drivers. Though it serves as a good example about the unindented consequences of technology. I hope someone comes up with a great solution. Please keep us updated.

Ugh. The real problem here is the pervasive negative attitude towards anybody of Arabic or Islamic background in the USA. But, given that we have to (at least for now) live with that unfortunate fact, this really does raise issues about problems of “too much information”.

The name of the cab driver, ideally, *shouldn't* be something that's considered particular “secure”, or information that should be carefully watched. And, as an open kind of guy, I think, hey, why not share it? But, given that people are going to be reacting this way, and given that I don't see any reason why the cab driver's name is NEEDED, then the ap should probably be updated not to include that information. (It probably does need to include *some* identifying information, such as car number, so that people can be sure they're completing the right hookup.)

I don't know what general conclusions do draw about this, but probably you shouldn't transmit any more information than is needed for any given application… because additional information may be then misused.
