I’m Going On Vacation To Puerto Vallarta, Mexico In January

Image for I’m Going On Vacation To Puerto Vallarta, Mexico In January

A winter vacation?  Heck yes!  I’ve always wanted to go somewhere warm during the winter.  Growing up in Minnesota is a whole other type of experience from November to March.  The ground is frozen and covered with layers of ice, you scrape ice from your car window, get dry skin and need a pair of gloves.

Update: More details about where I’m staying and my plans during the trip below!

I’m happy to share that I’m schedule to head to Mexico on Virgin America the first week of January to Puerto Vallarta Mexico!  I’ll be spending five days pretty much laying on the beach, sipping drinks and thinking about my goals for 2012.

I’m staying as a guest of Velas Vellarta, an all inclusive resort located in Puerto Vallarta.  The trip is sponsored by them and I will be capturing my experience via photos, video and a blog post.  Normally I blog about technology but after all the hard work us technology geeks put in, we all need a vacation, right?  My opinions of the resort will be my own but I want to include this disclaimer to make things clear.

Besides blogging, my personal goals during the trip are:

  • Getting a tan
  • Sleeping
  • Sipping on tropical drinks
  • Snacking
  • Going out to do one local activity (horseback riding most likely)

Last year I wanted to go somewhere nice for my birthday which is in February but didn’t have my passport.  I reached out to Adventure Girl who I’d met at Blogworld.  She travels all over the world discovering amazing vacation spots, exploring the local scene and shares her discoveries via  social media and her blog.  She’s also fun in person!  She suggested I visit Puerto Rico since it’s part of the United States (sort of).  Anyway I chickened out but decided it was time to finally get my first passport.

The last time I stayed in an all inclusive was in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands when I was working on the TSA project (yes, I helped get all those screeners hired!)

Location

Puerto Vallarta is on the Western side of Mexico about halfway down.  The flight is about 3 hours from San Francisco and I’m flying on Virgin America.

Weather

I pulled a forecast this morning and it looks to be about 80 degrees and sunny the entire trip!  I’ll arrive Wednesday afternoon, get checked in and may do a bit of exploring that evening to get my bearings.  On Friday or Saturday, I’m going to go horseback riding at a local ranch but mainly plan to be pool side soaking in the rays.  While there are a lot of water activities available including snorkeling, scuba diving, whale watching and sailing, I will not be in the water unless it’s very warm when I dip in my toe!

The Resort

Velas Vallarta is an all inclusive resort.  This means you can enjoy meals, drinks, nightly entertainment and a list of daily activities to choose from all included as a part of your experience at no extra cost.  There are several restaurants on-site that I’m looking forward to trying including the Andrea Restaurant.  They have over 300 rooms and suites with up to three bedrooms.  While you can enjoy your time at the resort and all the stuff to do, many people take advantage of being in an exotic location and leave to explore an experience their destination.  The resort also offers additional services like spa treatments.

For entertainment, they have different themes each night including Mexican Fiesta night, Casino night, Veracruz Dance night and Saturday is the International show full of music from Mexico, Hawaii and South America.

This resort is focused on being family friendly and has a lot of activities during the day including beach volleyball, water aerobics, yoga and game tournaments including bingo, ping pong and blackjack.

Looking forward to checking out the pool and the hotel in general and will have a followup blog post with more details.

T-Mobile Cell Phone Service In Mexico

Unfortunately, T-mobile doesn’t have great data roaming in Mexico so I will be putting my phone into airplane mode so as not to incur outrageous charges.  International GPRS data roaming is $15 per megabyte so with a few checks of my email, some tweets and apps running in the background, I could easily rack up a few hundred dollars in data charges.

I’m not planning to talk on the phone much while on vacation but it looks like for $15 I can add on T-mobile’s International talk and text to my existing plan and since I have unlimited minutes, those would apply in Mexico as well.  If you don’t opt-in for this plan while traveling, you’re looking at $1.79 per minute for phone calls.

Bon Voyage!

Wow!  I’m really, really looking forward to this trip!

Will I do things like snorkeling while I’m in Mexico?  Maybe.

I more than likely will unplug from technology and social media, aside from my camera and just enjoy the peace and quiet.

More soon and happy holidays!

15 Things I Learned Dating The Right Guy

Image for 15 Things I Learned Dating The Right Guy

I have done a lot of dating in the last year.  This has allowed me to compare and experience what at times feels like polar opposites to how guys go about woo’ing a lady.

I’ve known since I was a teenager I wanted to be in a relationship, one-to-one, with a guy who I thought was awesome and thought the same of me.  Ever hopeful, I started dating again last year with renewed optimism since the ratio of men to women in San Francisco seems to be in my favor. Viral Video Laughs: Why We Share Honey Badger and Baby Monkey

What makes us share a funny video, forward an email or tell a story to a friend about something we read?

A shift in perception and awareness according to Epipheo, a company that creates video content for companies.

A we gathered around computer monitors tonight discussing if WordPress could be used for the websites my roommates Alex and Tyler were thinking about, each shared a funny video from YouTube that made them laugh.  The tangent developed from me pointing out the “Ninja Say What?!” video I posted to my blog.

Have you seen these viral YouTube videos?

After watching these quirky, cute and slightly disturbing videos, I asked Tyler what him share the video. What feelings came to mind?  Happiness, smiles and laughter.

The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger

Baby Monkey Backwards On A Pig

What motivates us to share videos with each other?

We share things that bring us joy and allow us to change the direction of our awareness towards a more pleasant feeling. YouTube isn’t the #2 search engine by accident; it’s a breeding ground for happiness, discovery and new states of awareness.  We can escape from the daily grind of work for a good laugh, learn how to fix something that’s been broken and see how others feel about things in their world.  YouTube allows us to be part of the experience by uploading our own videos, sharing our discoveries with friends, commenting, rating, creating playlists, sending out personal messages and even adding annotations to a video!  It all makes us feel like an active participant vs a passive viewer which I think gives us a level of satisfaction akin to playing football vs watching it from one’s couch. I’m In Love With Spinning On A Bike

photo

Sipping my Genmachia tea with hot milk, I write this post after returning from my second time going to the gym.  Loved it and I’ll tell you exactly why!

My goals in signing up for my very first gym membership include:

  • tone thighs
  • increase core strength
  • reduce stress

New outlook on spinning

I always thought spin classes were dumb.  Who wants to go to a class where someone yells at you like a drill sergeant?  My friends in Minneapolis who did spin also went at ungodly hours like 6:25am!  Blech!

I love spinning!  By myself.  Today and Monday I spent 15 minutes on the bike.  Today was amazing.  I varied the pace and after checking Wikipedia, understood how to adjust the seat’s height and forward positioning based on my height.  Wikipedia said the seat should be at your hips and forward enough so your knee is over the ball of your foot with a slight bend.

I completely lost myself in the bike today and could feel it working my thighs and butt.  Wonderful feeling!  After that, I went over to the elliptical machine for 10 minutes. Read More…

New Yorkers Dumpster Dive For Free Shoes In Union Square [VIDEO]

Would you dig through trash for free fashion?  With the economy still affecting much of the country, people are always looking for ways to save money.  Over 50 New Yorkers scored scored free name brand shoes Sunday night in Union Square by taking initiative.

I was leaving Max Brenner’s with my Twitter friend @Nukirk when we saw a group of people gathered in front of Shoemania on the corner of Broadway and 14th.  As we approached, it appeared that people were looking at the bags of trash on the curb.  Some bags had been opened and people were looking through the trash for shoes.

There were about 30 people separating empty boxes, loose paper and empty soda cups from shoes.  There were murmurs that there were only left shoes but that was quickly squashed when someone yelled, “I found a pair!”.  People moved in quickly, opening up new bags and pouring the contents onto the sidewalk.  A young couple had found 4 pairs of mens shoes and had them lined up near Storemania’s closed doors.  I chatted with several people who apparently had found matching pairs of shoes.  Nukirk overheard people working together to find matches.
New Yorkers Dumpster Dive For Free Shoes

There were all sorts of shoes including Adidas, Crocs, Converse, Ed Hardy, Dansko, Sketchers, Teva, Donald Pliner, MBT, Steve Madden, Mephisto, Ecco and Dr. Martins.  Styles included everything from women’s heels and sandals to men’s dress shoes and high end sneakers.

For some human sociology reason, this sort of behaviour captivated me.  I snapped a few photos at this unique flashmob event.  A taxi slowed down to check out what was going on.  A woman in a tan SUV stopped as if she was considering joining the free-for-all.  I asked Nukirk if he wanted to join in.  We edged our way into the crowd as I exclaimed how people were overcoming the social messages that “dumpster diving” is a bad thing.  I’ve seen some beautiful furniture pieces my friends have landed at garage sales, on Craigslist and yes, dumpster diving on the weekends.  I started by watching others toss and sort shoes.  Nukirk was hopeful he’d match up a pair of artsy sneakers.  I scanned for matching pairs, tossing and sorting shoes to the sidewalk to make this a cooperative dumpster delight.

I ended up scoring a pair of brown sandals early on and had a great time joining all these enterprising New Yorkers in getting a great deal!  As we looked for our pairs, people stopped, stared, joined in, took photos and helped others find matching pairs.

As I left in a taxi with my score, I saw the crowd had swelled and wished everyone good luck in finding their next pair *smile*

Getting Your Netflix DVD’s Returned Safely

This post is a thank you to @ramfrancisuk and @WendyNorris came to my rescue with this link to find a USPS Mailbox! Thanks you two!

Now that I’m living in San Francisco proper, one of the big things is to figure out where stuff is. As a long time user of Netflix, I enjoy that I don’t have to go any further than my mailbox to pickup and drop off movies. Unfortunately on my walks around the neighborhood, I realized I wasn’t seeing any mailboxes.

What Is Netflix?

Netflix works by allowing you to select movies and put them into a virtual queue. You sign up for a plan and you are given a monthly number of rotating slots. They mail out your movies via USPS. You open them up, watch them and return them in the same mailer, postage paid. There are no late fees and Netflix is awesome when traveling and for long holiday weekends. I have the 3 DVD rental plan for $15/month.

[VIDEO] Play Pacman Live On Google’s Homepage

Imagine my surprise when I went to the Google home page to search today and saw the PacMan screen.  Looks like it’s Pacman’s 30th anniversary. This is truly THE BEST customized Google homepage logo header to date!

I made a video playing a few rounds:

Live gameplay in the Google logo box!

Seriously, how much work is going to get done today in the world?

According to Marcin Wichary, senior UX designer and developer at Google, here’s why he thought it would be a great fit to feature Pacman on Google’s homepage:

PAC-MAN seems like a natural fit for the Google homepage. They’re both deceptively straightforward, carefully hiding their complexity under the hood. There’s a light-hearted, human touch to both of them. And we can only hope you find using Google at least a quarter as enjoyable as eating dots and chasing ghosts. You know, without actually needing any quarters.

Your goal is to eat the discs (or pac-dots) and not get killed by the ghosts.  Make the ghosts edible by eating the larger glowing discs (or power pellets)

The Legend Of Zelda Is Alive on YouTube

Today while looking up songs to play on my new iPhone app, Ocarina, I came across a song for Zelda and thought it was high time to give tribute to this amazing game!

(Speed Run, part 1 of 4 by Mike “TSA” Damiani)

What is the Ledgend of Zelda?

This game was released in the US market in 1987.  You are Link, the main character guy who looks like an elf and  you must rescue the princess while navigating mazes, killing monsters and collecting valuable relics during your journey.

Fond Memories of Zelda

I vividly remember playing Legend of Zelda in 5th grade (about 1990) an loving it!  Much of the game is based on solving puzzles and collecting things.  Zelda was one of the first long form games I played as a teenager.  I would finish my homework and then play Zelda for several hours at a time.  Zelda had this infectious repetitive music that made you feel like a hero!  When you did fight in Zelda, it’s not as scary as other games.  Later on, I found out my preferences for game play are pretty consistent with that of female gamers (although I don’t consider myself to be a gamer).
