Loving Day: How Interracial Marriage Became Legal

June 12th is Loving Day and marks a time in history when people thought quite differently about who could love who.

They did this sort of thinking out out and put laws in place to match those thoughts.  I knew about the court case but didn’t know there was an actual day to celebrate and recognize a change on love an marriage in America.

I participated in a guided interview on Growing up mixed in America this Sunday as a part of MTV’s ACT awareness campaign and decided to do a video to share what’s become known as “The Loving Story”:

In 1958 two people decided to get married.  They were in love.  Unfortunately, Mildred and Richard lived in Virginia at the time where laws like the Racial Integrity Act of 1924 prevented them from legally getting married.  Why?  Mildred was Black and Richard was White.  They decided to go to Washington D.C. to get married because it was important to take those vows and pledge their love for each other.

Well, it turned out Virginia not only had a law against interracial marriage but also one against getting married in anther state and trying to be all uppity and return to Virginia!  The Lovings were arrested in their home and taken to jail.  The judge was going to sentence them for one to three years but told them if they left the state (for at least 25 years), he would let them leave.   Read More…

Teacher’s music video “My Pencil” feat Mr. McCraw on Elementary Student MSA Test Scores

Check out this video featuring 4th grade elementary teacher Mr. McCraw who tells students a story of how being prepared with help them be successful when it comes to “reading and mathematics” not only for the MSA (Maryland School Assessment) but also on the Stanford 10 (Better known as the SAT).   Nice hook and great message!

I was sent this awesome video by Chip  (@Chipperd) who produced the video!

Houston’s Brutal Police Culture

This video is from Houston, Texas where a young man accused of burglary is stopped by police (struck by a squad car) and then repeatedly kicked, punched and assaulted.

Even though the first thing he did was go to the ground and put his hands behind his head, he was pounded on by several offices for nearly 30 seconds.  This video was captured by a nearby security camera and both the legal and law enforcement agencies in Houston did everything they could to supress this video from reaching the public.

I received an email from ColorOfChange about this incident.

The above video which was released last week shows four Houston police officers brutally beating a 15-year old burglary suspect, without cause, while at least eight other officers looked on and did nothing.  And the officers are facing only misdemeanors. Unfortunately, this is nothing new for Houston, which has a history of police misconduct and a lack of accountability.

Please join us in demanding real accountability by calling on the Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate Chad Holley’s brutal beating, and the culture that led to it.

SXSW 2011 Vote Up: Socio-Tech Panels With A Bit Of Drama Sauce

SXSW 2011 conference header banner
Last week voting opened up for SXSW and I’ve pulled together a collection of panels submitted by some of my favorite people on Twitter (and in person!) and I’ll be doing a followup SXSW post on cloud companies with panel submissions.

My submission made it in even though I didn’t get an email from the SXSW staff.  I’ve been graciously invited to speak on two panels so if you want me presenting out SXSW, please vote for the second panel listed, WordPress: The Small Business Swiss Army Knife , because WordPress and  business is where my heart is.

How to Vote for a SXSW panel

First off.  How important is voting anyway?

Voting accounts for 30% of the final vote on which panels are selected.  The other 70% is split between a SXSW board (40%) and SXSW staff 30%.  Last year for my presentation, “How Sci-Fi Shapes The Internet“, I did very little promotion or “vote begging” and it was still selected.  Cream will always rise to the top.

My advice for anyone who feels strongly about getting votes for their panel is to write up a post expanding on the value your topic delivers to the SXSW audience, ask for a vote in the post and ask people to comment on your panel.

Voting for a SXSW panel

You can vote between August 11th – 27th.
You need an account at SXSW.com to cast your vote.
Here are instructions directly from the conference site:

Just sign-up for an account here. During the public voting phase (August 11-27, 2010) all you need to do is sign-up for an account. Signing-up is free, quick and easy. And your sign-up information remains completely confidential.

The SXSW Panels!

Here they are! I’ll tell you which one I voted for at the end *smile*

What The Government Can Learn From Amazon

Adria Richards, ButYoureAGirl.com
Have you ever bought something on Amazon and wondered, “Why isn’t buying a passport as easy as this?” With over 300 million people in the United States, there is certainly room for improvement how their lives are recorded, updated and exchanged.  If the Arpanet was created to provide a centralized, communications network, why are we not taking advantage of this access to lower costs and reduce data errors? Amazon processes, ships, and delivers packages all over the world and can now predict delivery within 12 hours of ordering. Why does your driver’s license take two weeks? We will explore what advances in digital data records and key benefits including: savings on redundant data entry and mistakes, less identity theft and fraud, rewarding efficiency and creating social benchmarks. The other side of this data coin includes managing expectations, privacy, security and opt-out from such programs. RFID’s in passports, pets and popcorn seem like the stuff of science fiction.

WordPress has been steadily growing in popularity as a CMS over the last two years because it’s free and relatively easy to learn–especially when compared with other packages like Joomla and Drupal. But WordPress is more than just a convenient choice — in many cases it’s the only web tool a small business owner is ever likely to need. WordPress isn’t just for blogs anymore, seamlessly handling media content, ecommerce, membership sites, search engine optimization, mobile sites, lead generation and much much more. Our panel of experts will describe the many uses and strengths of WordPress and demonstrate how WordPress is adaptable into just about any small business use.

What Comic Books Can Teach Mobile Application Designers

Anjuan Simmons, Adverlyze
Mobile application design is a conversation that allows the developer to speak to the user. While manuals are able to guide this conversation, nothing is more immediate and enduring than the user interface of the application itself. Comic books have evolved through the years to maximize their ability to tell a story while confined to two dimensional static images. This presentation will explore the design principles Eisner shared in his landmark book and specifically apply them to mobile application design. Scott McCloud’s book “Understanding Comics”, which built on top of the foundation laid by Eisner, will also be covered as well as McCloud’s later work “Reinventing Comics”. The comic book medium can provide a blueprint for blockbuster mobile applications as well. When attendees leave this session, they will know how to throw some Eisner onto their mobile application designs!

Social Media: The Pink Collar Ghetto of Tech?

Keidra Chaney, The Learned Fangirl – Adria Richards invited to panel
With women accounting for the majority of users on social media sites, there are exciting opportunities for women to take leadership roles in social media – as consultants, developers, entrepreneurs and thought leaders. Still, women make up less than 20% of panelists at major tech conferences, while women focused social media conferences like BlogHer, She’s Geeky, and Blogalicious continue to grow. Is social media is seen as a “soft” profession and drawing lower comparative salaries and less room for executive level leadership than other technology – oriented fields? Is this already happening? This panel of women professionals that work in social media will take a hard look at the unique issues women tech professionals face in the age of the social web, and discuss whether social media is helping to crack the “digital ceiling” of the tech world or creating a separate but equal space for women to lead?

We’re at a climactic turn for technology and how it’s become an immovable piece of business operations and our personal lives – but: *can we be doing more?* Are we balancing our ability to produce, sell and acquire more with improving the overall quality of life for ourselves and our planet? Or are we making it easier to fit more work into the same amount of time.  Analysis, thoughts, musings, hopes and inspirations from my brain, and the brains of my friends and industry peers who believe in the same things and share the same hopes.

Cultivating a User-Centered Culture

Nancy Lyons, Megan Wilker, Geek Girls Guide
We’ve all heard about the importance of user-centered design (hopefully). But, how can a person, a team or an organization hope embrace it as a core value if the entire organization isn’t focused on who those users are? How can we bridge the gap between a typical web developer who is male and between the ages of 18-29 (according to A List Apart’s “Survey for the People Who Make Websites”, 2008), and the 45% of the senior population in the US who are now on the Internet (According to Pew Internet and the American Life Project, 2009)? From design to production to project management to customer service and support, this session aims to help web development teams view work product as a direct outcome of a work culture that includes and respects users at every level.  We’ll prove the hard business value of soft, squishy terms like emotional intelligence, intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and vulnerability. But no hugging, we promise.

Is Your iPhone App Supporting Hate Crimes? The story TaxiMagic and Mustafa

Are iPhone apps like TaxiMagic perpetuating hate crimes?

Last night I took a taxi home from the Tenderloin to the Mission District.  I had the pleasure of being driven by Mustafa, a relaxed, cheerful older man.  Mustafa shared with me how he no longer feels safe driving his cab after 16 years due to an iPhone app called TaxiMagic.  He’s had at least three bad experiences upon being dispatched to a call that originated from the TaxiMagic iPhone app.

It’s affecting his work focus and earnings and the supervisor won’t help.

I asked Mustafa for permission to record our conversation.

If you have ideas that could help Mustafa, email me adria@butyoureagirl.com

I’m Rocking The Red Pump For National Women And Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day!

I created this video earlier this month for The Red Pump Project who is working hard to raise awareness for the upcoming March 10th, National Women And Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

The goal is to get 500 blogs in the 50 days leading up to March 10th, 2010.

I found out about this day of awareness and prevention through education via @LuvvieIG who is the most crazy fun person in person, on Twitter and abundant blogger I’ve ever met! She is full of positive energy and truly puts her heart into this work.

Did You Know

 • There are over 33 million people infected with HIV/AIDS?
 • 1 million are here in the USA
 • 280,000 of those are women

Red Pump Widget She started The Red Pump Project with Karyn and tirelessly works to raise awareness how women can have fun yet stay safe when being sexually active. I attended a fundraiser last year for The Red Pump Project and had a great time!

In 2006, teenage girls (yes someone between the ages of 13-19 years old) represented 39% of new AIDS infections.  I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to be told that you have contracted a virus that can kill you at what should the the start of the rest of your life.  Can you?

Of that number, 69% were Black and 19% Latino.

This needs to change and I support the Red Pump Project as decisions drive behavior.  Let’s help these young women make better choices that will help to secure a future for them without the pain, shame and burden of being infected with a lifelong virus!

Please join in by visiting the post and adding the badge to your site to show your support!

Black People on Twitter!

Why are there so many Black people on Twitter?Tweetmeblack Twitter bird with afro

This question came up again when @nukirk retweeted @blackcanseco’s tweet that mainstream media (NBC Chicago) picked up that there are Black people in Twitter. What the heck!? Yes folks, not only is Twitter being used by people of all races

updated 3/14/2010
Of online adults, 19% have reported using an online update service like Twitter.  Of that segment, 26% report their race as African American (Non-Hispanic)
(thanks @shanselman for the factual correction and then @baratunde for pointing out the 26% is a segment of the 19% who report using an update service!)

Ok, now that we’ve covered that, let’s explore some thoughts on the issue that I’ve had inside my mind since joining Twitter in March of 2008:

What does it mean to be Black on Twitter?

Some people on Twitter who are Black talk about issues related to race; some don’t. Some use slang; some don’t. Some are just who they are. People bring their interests to Twitter, some find new things to enjoy via Twitter.

I Will Hug 500 People For A BlogWorld Pass

Update: OMG! I won a FULL ACCESS PASS To Blogworld! Thanks John Chow!

I’ve always wanted to hug people. The thought of transforming someone’s day with a simple touch has captivated me for years since I watched the Free Hugs Campaign on YouTube in 2007. I’ve said to folks it was be fun to have a Hug Campaign in Minneapolis…

Here’s my chance! I will hug 500 people and photograph my progress if you select me for a Blogworld pass John Chow.

My life has been transformed by blogging conferences. I attended my first blog conference, Wordcamp Chicago, in June 2009 and it was the first time I felt comfortable at a technology conference. Previous conferences contained a bunch of awkward geeks avoiding eye contact. This blogging thing was about smiles, food and sharing! I loved it and wanted more!

I went back to Chicago again, the same month, for Blogging While Brown and it was even more amazing! I had great conversations, enjoyed the speakers and went out after the conference with fellow attendees. I was getting the hang of things!

One thing that has always been hard for me is photographs. I don’t have any from under the age of 10 (long story) and have always felt uncomfortable about people taking photos. That changed at Blogging While Brown. It was like I had forgotten to be self conscious. I couldn’t believe how spending time with the attendees was making me feel. I even asked someone to take a photograph with me and an attendee just to make sure I wasn’t imagining this! I was able to overcome something that had been haunting me for most of my life just by…attending. I wanted more!

Again, I returned to Chicago in July for BlogHer through the encouragement of women I had met locally and at Blogging While Brown. I wasn’t able to get a full pass as it was too late into the registration period but BlogHer had LobbyCon which allowed me to view the sessions and attend! I was so happy, so grateful and oh so excited!

BlogHer blew me away. The women there were serious and focused on success yet playful and kind. I felt so blessed to be able to attend and be part of the event as the topic was IRL (In Real Life). I did something I told myself I hated…well, at least used to hate; I networked! In fact, each day I woke up, I couldn’t wait to go and meet new bloggers, new women, new business focused bloggers just…like…me.

How does this tie into hugs? I want to thank the blogging community. You took me in, you welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like one of the family. Coming from an IT background, I’ve never felt that way before at a Microsoft, VMware or Linux event. I now crave that interaction, that social, bloggy atmosphere.  I want to walk around at Blogworld and give out 500 hugs to give back even just a little of what I’ve received in terms of acceptance, help, support, collaboration and ideas to the blogging community.

When I first signed up at Wordcamp Chicago, I told myself, “I’m not a blogger. I’m just going to spy on the bloggers”. Serious. I felt outside of the circle.

I’ve come to realize that I have a lot to contribute to the blogging community. When I attend conferences, I’m engaged. I take notes, I listen to others and interact. I also very much enjoy all the parties after the conferences ends!

When I blog, I have 15 different viewpoints:

 1. A female blogger
 2. A Brown blogger
 3. A Jewish blogger
 4. A tech blogger
 5. A young blogger
 6. A WordPress blogger
 7. A environmental blogger
 8. A health blogger
 9. An organic blogger
 10. A iPhone owning blogger
 11. A Twitter loving blogger
 12. A business owner blogger
 13. A blog trainer blogger
 14. A customer service blogger
 15. and a GTD blogger

I’ve done calculations.  If I divide the 500 hugs equally over 3 days, I need to hug 167 people each day.

If I divide that into 3 hours of full on hugging, I need to hug 1 person every minute.

If you pick me to attend the Blogworld Expo, I will buy one of those counters where I click the button to indicate I’ve done a hug.  Through a series of tweets, photos and blog updates, I will keep you updated on my hug progress all in the good name of blogging.

QuickPwn.com Profits on iPhone Jailbreak With Microsoft Ads

Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

Continuing from my last blog post on how QuickPwn.com was making a quick buck on iPhone jailbreaking software with Google Adsense, we explore how they are exploiting the Microsoft Advertising network and fleecing people on pay-per-click.

Background

QuickPwn is a piece of software developed for the iPhone which jailbreaks (allows a different operating system besides the one Apple installed for more options) and unlocks (allows you to use other phone providers besides ATT on your iPhone like how I use T-Mobile) your device.  It has been developed by a dedicated group of developers known as iPhone Dev Team.  Their website is located at http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

They have released software for the iPhone for some time now and people look to the iPhone Dev Team each time a new version of the iPhone, iTunes or iPhone software is released.  This is because it’s not safe to upgrade your jailbroke iPhone; you will lose access to your custom apps (the reason you first jailbroke your iPhone) and you may not be able to roll back to a previous version once you update (some companies, like Apple, will try to restrict your freedom on how you use their products).

Make Note!

The Real iPhone Development Team Is Located At http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

QuickPwn.com is not run by the REAL jailbreak software development team

 • No Software Development
 • No Support for Jailbreaking
 • Domain Squatters

With the release of the new 3.0 iPhone software last week and the new iPhone 3G S phone, the internet was hopping with excitement to try the latest and greatest stuff.  Visitors over at the iPhone Dev Team blog couldn’t wait for the new jailbreak software to be ready and were very grateful when ultrasn0w was released this week, allowing you to software jailbreak an iPhone 3G (not 3G S).

ibrock   Thank u to the dev team u guys r the bomb diggity ,,,,

linos  you guys are ******** awesome, i owe you a lot. It worked perfect

DjSkully  Dj Skully says thank you Dev.Team

Ibkp  I bought an iphone from a friend (iphone-AT&T user) and I was able to unlock it with Ultrasnow (it was very simple and fast!)

richiiie  un grand merci!!!! thanks from France, guys! you did a great job!!

So if everyone was happy, what’s the problem?

The Problem

Someone on the internet decided they wanted to make some money.  They didn’t create anything of value people would pay for but they knew some folks who did, the iPhone Dev Team.  This person registered a domain nameusing the application’s name, QuickPwn.  They also created a Twitter account of the same name.

The worst was yet to come.  Now it’s one thing if they created a site that was based on being an informational site to help others with the software.  Instead they headed out to Google and Microsoft to sign up for revenue based advertising where they inserted code into their site so ads would display and they would get paid for the clicks.

In my previous post, I covered the how and why to Google advertising.  Microsoft, your turn.

Microsoft Advertising

Visiting the site for Microsoft’s ad campaign network, it was very focused on people paying for the ads.  It was difficult to find information on troubleshooting, how to’s and TOS policies.  Overall, Microsoft portrays that your ads will end up on high quality sites with lots of views.  QuickPwn.com is not anywhere near the word “quality” but based on their sleezy actions to steal legitimate traffic away from a development team right before the big launch of both a new iPhone and OS, I would certainly credit QuickPwn.com as being high traffic.

Screenshot of QuickPwn.com

QuickPwn.com website

How You Can Help

 1. Review the Quickpwn.com and determine if you think you would to pay to have your ads on this site
 2. Visit the Microsoft’s FAQ page to review their Terms of Service (TOS)…If you can find them
 3. Submit a report to Microsoft Advertising via phone 1-800-518-5689 or email and tell them you don’t think organizations would still pay to be listed on low value sites like QuickPwn.com and that the site itself is exploiting open source developers.

Here are the resource links mentioned in the video

Google Adsense Abuse for iPhone Jailbreak Software QuickPwn

The Real Site

http://blog.iphone-dev.org is the real website for Quickpwn and Yellowsn0w.  These developers have worked hard to free our iPhones from the clutches of ATT so we could not only choose alternate carriers like T-mobile but also we could install iPhone apps that didn’t make it through the slow, complex and highly suspect process of getting into the App Store.  I’m personally still waiting to get my hands in ikeepass.

The Problem

I was googling for, “jailbreak iphone 3G S” since I won a new iPhone 3G S at the BlogggingWhileBrown conference Friday night (Thanks ATT for sponsoring the event!)  and need to stay in the know for when I can use my new phone with T-mobile. I saw QuickPwn.com in the search results and was a bit confused. I knew it was a piece of software but not that there was a site for it as well. I went on to investigate.

Google Search results for "jailbreak iphone 3g S"

My search results for "jailbreak iphone 3g S"

A cybersquatter came in and registered the domain http://quickpwn.com and the entire site is plastered with Google Adsense.   The person who created the site is “encouraging clicks” by plastering 85% of the site with advertising.  There is almost no content on the site.  One post has less than 40 words and the rest is all Google Adsense.

He also registered the Twitter name: Quickpwn. He does not work with the development team at all so it appears he is doing this to get paid off the work of others. The real Dev-team has contacted him and he assures them he is “helping them”.

This site needs to be stopped because it’s misleading website visitors, Google Adwords people paying for placement and most importantly, not providing credit to the actual developers of the jailbreaking software.

Based on Google’s AdSense Program Policies,  I feel the site is violating the following guidelines:

Encouraging Clicks

Publishers may not ask others to click their ads or use deceptive implementation methods to obtain clicks. This includes, but is not limited to, offering compensation to users for viewing ads or performing searches, promising to raise money for third parties for such behavior or placing images next to individual ads.

In order to ensure a good experience for users and advertisers, publishers participating in the AdSense program may not:

 • Encourage users to click the Google ads using phrases such as “click the ads”, “support us”, “visit these links” or other similar language.
 • Direct user attention to the ads using arrows or other graphical gimmicks.
 • Place misleading images alongside individual ads.
 • Format ads so that they become indistinguishable from other content on that page.
 • Format site content so that it is difficult to distinguish it from ads.
 • Place misleading labels above Google ad units. For instance, ads may be labelled “Sponsored Links” or “Advertisements”, but not “Favourite Sites” or “Today’s Top Offers”.

Webmaster Guidelines

AdSense publishers are required to adhere to the webmaster quality guidelines.

 • Do not place excessive, repetitive or irrelevant keywords in the content or code of webpages.
 • Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
 • Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.
 • Do not include deceptive or manipulative content or construction to improve your site’s search engine ranking (e.g. your site’s PageRank).

Site Behavior

Sites showing Google ads should be easy for users to navigate. Sites may not change user preferences, redirect users to unwanted websites, initiate downloads, include malware or contain pop-ups or pop-unders that interfere with site navigation.

How You Can Help

 1. Review the site Quickpwn.com and determine if you think it violates the guidelines
 2. Visit the Google Adsense Support page to review the guidelines
 3. Submit a violation report to Google Adsense

This hurts businesses who are paying for the advertising as they don’t know it’s showing up on his website in what I deem to be an unprofessional way.

It hurts the developers who could be benefitting from the Google Adsense revenue but are not.  The Dev Team does not accept donations directly although I saw some of the developers are asking for a few iPhone 3G S’  so they can work better to create new jailbreak software.

And most importantly, it hurts website visitors who are looking for accurate and helpful information.

You can also give a shout out to the real development team at http://blog.iphone-dev.org and on Twitter @iphone_dev and let them know you appreciate their hard work on the iPhone!
