Channel Thoughts

I enjoy Mark’s channel and find his reviews to be authentic, timely and to the point.  While at first he mainly covered Apple products, he now has expanded to cameras, tablets, games and technology news.  Earlier this year he began syndicating his show with Revision3, one of the largest tech focused web/tv show companies on the web today.

One of his early videos that went viral was his prediction of the first iPad which he released December 28th, 2009, making it a full month before the actual iPad announcement in late January.  This video has over 5 million views to date.  It highlights Mark’s strength in gathering and presenting accurate and relevant information on technology products.

His channel success has certainly been an inspiration to me and after I became a partner in February, began publish more videos I saw an increase in subscribers.  While my focus is more on how to use technology vs reviewing tech gadgets, I learned quite a bit from watching this video including that Screenflow can be used to edit live video.  I’ve used it since early last year but only for screencasts and recording webinars.  My first video edit with Screenflow is the one I did on the mobile Google+ app for android where there are two shots of myself and my Nexus S.  Thanks for the shout out guys!

Interview Questions

Amani interviews Mark with a split screen view and asks the following questions:

How did you come up with the name, “SoldierKnowsBest”?

How did you get into video?

When did you realize this was something that would gain traction?

How did viewers respond to your initial videos?

Did you have experience creating videos?

Do you pay attention to your stats and analytics?

What new opportunities have come out of creating YouTube videos for you?

What monetization opportunities are there for YouTube content creators?

Creating YouTube videos: a hobby or your full time job?

What kind of equipment do you use?

Advice for people new to creating videos

Do you have video editing software on your phone?

What’s hot in technology right now?

Do companies send you products?  Do you buy your own products?

Summary

Advice from Mark: Pick something you’re going to be able to talk about a lot.  Find something you truly love and are truly interested in.  Keep making videos.  The more videos you make, the more likely someone is to come across one of your videos.  Listen to the feedback from your viewers.  Sign up for the YouTube Partner Program.

Where is he now? Mark recently returned from Berlin, Germany where he covered the IFA conference which is an international consumer electronics show.  You can catch highlights from his IFA trip on his channel!

Image for Thank You YouTube Subscribers! 10000+ [VIDEO]

I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has watched my videos here on the blog, on YouTube and through my web series AskAdria.  I recently passed 10,000 YouTube subscribers and one of my videos now has over 200,000 views.  I’m super excited about these accomplishments and this tells me I need to pivot and focus on doing video.  I became a YouTube partner this February to increase my reach and make a commitment to delivering more value based content via video.

Help My Friend Luvvie And Give Her $5 To Get To The DC NTEN Conference [VIDEO]

My friend @luvvieIG is raising money to go to the NTEN nonprofit conference. She’s been asked to speak there and needs to raise by Monday to go. You can contribute at http://luvvie.chipin.com

She’s gone two years in a row and was asked to speak this year but is struggling to make the conference budget as a newly launched freelancer.

For the past 2 years, I’ve gone to the Nonprofit Technology Conference to represent the organization I used to work for as Marketing Coordinator. This conference is an awesome 3 days of panels, networking and just getting to learn more about working in the nonprofit technology field (my specialty). Both years I’ve gone, I learned so much and it was just so valuable. Plus, I’ve met so many technology/nonprofit big wigs like Beth Kanter there.

This year’s conference is from March 16-19 in Washington DC. I’ve been invited to co-present an Affinity Group at the conference where I’ll be talking about nonprofits HUGE HUGE HUGE opportunity. Co presenting at the conference I love??? Wowsies! Lucky me. Except.. now that I’m working for myself, no organization is sending me. And my pockets are currently shallower than a kiddie pool. :-(

Registration is $400 (and that’s a discounted rate for speakers)
Flight: $250-300 (it’s so late in the game)

I need your help getting to the 2011 NTC Conference! I’d truly appreciate it if you’d donate $5 to this. That would go a LONG way in ensuring that I’ll be in DC, business cards ready, and presenting!

Viral Video Laughs: Why We Share Honey Badger and Baby Monkey

What makes us share a funny video, forward an email or tell a story to a friend about something we read?

A shift in perception and awareness according to Epipheo, a company that creates video content for companies.

A we gathered around computer monitors tonight discussing if WordPress could be used for the websites my roommates Alex and Tyler were thinking about, each shared a funny video from YouTube that made them laugh.  The tangent developed from me pointing out the “Ninja Say What?!” video I posted to my blog.

Have you seen these viral YouTube videos?

After watching these quirky, cute and slightly disturbing videos, I asked Tyler what him share the video. What feelings came to mind?  Happiness, smiles and laughter.

The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger

Baby Monkey Backwards On A Pig

What motivates us to share videos with each other?

We share things that bring us joy and allow us to change the direction of our awareness towards a more pleasant feeling. YouTube isn’t the #2 search engine by accident; it’s a breeding ground for happiness, discovery and new states of awareness.  We can escape from the daily grind of work for a good laugh, learn how to fix something that’s been broken and see how others feel about things in their world.  YouTube allows us to be part of the experience by uploading our own videos, sharing our discoveries with friends, commenting, rating, creating playlists, sending out personal messages and even adding annotations to a video!  It all makes us feel like an active participant vs a passive viewer which I think gives us a level of satisfaction akin to playing football vs watching it from one’s couch. I’m Going To Google YouTube Headquarters! #AskYT

Event

I’ve been invited to head down to Mountain View to visit with the YouTube Partner folks!  We’ll have lunch and then be part of a “Ask Youtube” meetup with discussion. Although this will be livestreamed, they won’t be taking quesitons about the new livestreaming service YouTube is working on.

Participate

There’s a Twitter hashtag for questions #AskYT
and you can watch the livestream at http://www.youtube.com/youtube

This will also allow me to check off another item from my long list of life goals!  I applied for the YouTube Partner Program in February 20111 so I could do revenue sharing, have access to customize my channel, longer upload permissions and any other goodies parterns were eligble for.

At one time, the thought of talking in front of a camera scared me to death but I’ve been able to overcome that and now enjoy helping others by sharing what I know.  Plus, monetizing that knowledge is a blessing I’m going to pursue.  Just like Angel of ConcreteLoop said, “It’s not selling out, it’s stepping up” when you look at, evaluate and put your gifts to work with advertisers.

Super excited about this opportunity!

Sizer Utility Resizes Your Windows for HD YouTube Camtasia Studio [VIDEO]

Do you create videos and tutorials to share on YouTube? In order for the videos to show up as the widescreen version, the dimensions of your video need to be at least 1280×760. I use Sizer to quickly resize my windows before doing screencast recording with Camtasia Studio or Jing.

Do You Ever Encounter People Who Are A Drag?

Sometimes you meet people who bring you down.

They complain about the weather, their back pain and politics.

Realize you don’t have to put up with people crapping in your personal space!

Tell them that you’re not their personal dumping ground for how horrible their life is and then go enjoy the day!

How do you deal with people who try to bring you down?

Do you let your family say things you would not allow strangers to say to you?
